The Central Board of Secondary Education derives its history from the erstwhile U. P. Board of High School and Intermediate Education set up in 1921. In 1929, its jurisdiction increased to cover the adjoining areas. As the quality of education under the board increased, the popularity of this board grew rapidly and soon, in 1952, its constitution was amended to increase its jurisdiction to other parts of the country as well. In 1962, the Board was reconstituted. Its primary objectives then were to serve educational institutions more effectively and to fulfil the educational needs of those students whose parents were employed by the Central Government and had frequently transferrable jobs. Today, the Board has under its jurisdiction close to 16,000 schools in India as well in 23 countries.
An astounding 13,70,000 students appeared for Class 10th and 10,40,000 students appeared for the Class 12th examinations in the recently concluded CBSE examinations of 2016.
